Reggio Calabria

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LUNGOMARE IN ITALY

REGGIO CALABRIA

GUARDIAN OF A TREASURE: THE BRONZES OF RIACE

Between history and nature, in the heart of the Mediterranean, Reggio Calabria with its Lungomare is one of the most evocative places in Italy. You can enjoy wonderful landscapes, spectacular views, admiring the Strait of Messina, Etna, in a frame of magnolias and dates and tropical plants. Walking along the seafront, you will discover the Arena dello Stretto , an amphitheater of modern construction where theatrical performances and musical events take place, and from which you can admire the mirage of the Fata Morgana , the optical phenomenon that sees Sicily reflected on the sea, and it makes it so close that it seems as if you can touch it.

Right next to the seafront, to visit the National Museum of Magna Graecia, recently renovated,  where it is possible to admire many works, including the famous Riace Bronzes , the statues of two naked warriors found in 1972 in the depths of the Ionian Sea, witnesses of classical Greek art.
Walking through the streets and avenues, Corso Garibaldi leads from the museum to the Villa comunale, and is a place of shops where you can go shopping, and admire the Cilea theater , the largest theater in the city.

The many churches are to be admired throughout the city, including the most imposing the Duomo, the Basilica of Maria SS della Consolazione, the Sanctuary of San Paolo and the Ottomati Church. Palazzo Campanella which is the seat of the Regional Council, with its glass facades, the Museum of the musical instrument and the Paleomarino museum. In addition to the Bronzes, the symbol of the city is the Aragonese Castle , the oldest fortification in Reggio, which has lost part of its structure, but which preserves all its history especially in the two cylindrical towers, from which, climbing to the top, you can enjoy the view of the whole city and range between sea, sky and mountains.
